New Food Waste Collection Bins Coming to Breakrooms, Kitchens, and More
Food waste collection bins with green labels are being placed in staff breakrooms, kitchens, and food service areas.
Food waste will now be separated from landfill trash into the new bins and sent for other recovery programs, daily. These bins are specifically for food waste only.

When this will occur
Bin placement and collection will occur in the following phased approach:
- Phase 1: Bins will be placed in all hospital breakrooms by May 31.
- Phase 2: Bins will then be placed in non-hospital and outlying locations. The completion date for this phase is to be determined.
- Phase 3: Bins will be placed in all cafes. Implementation for this phase is to be determined.
What staff need to do
Starting now, please separate your food waste from landfill trash by scraping containers and placing the leftovers in food waste collection containers.
This will include:
- Fruit and vegetable scraps
- Bread, rice, cheese, and pasta
- Meat, bones, seafood, and more!
Do not place the following in the bins:
- Liquids
- Compostable products like containers, bowls and drink carriers
- Paper products like napkins or paper towels
- Plastic wrappers and packaging, or utensils
- Styrofoam, glass, metal, or cans

California throws away more than six million tons of food waste every year. Food waste creates methane gas when it decomposes. Methane is 72 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Please help UC Davis Health with this new effort.
